Since 1991Georgia experienced a devastating civil war and civil strife, resulting in 286,000 internally displaced from their homes; children who lost parents, relatives. A large number are young people under 17 years of age became such called Street Children, IDP children, the number of the institutionalized children has been increased. Most of them became orphans or live in single-parent homes, approximately 3000 live in the streets. As in many regions devastated by war and displacement, peace-building begins with the education, or re-education, of young people who must learn ways to build a future where social conflict can be addressed more creatively than through the use of brute force.
There are approximately 10 000 children in the children institutions. After age of 16 the government can not provide any kid of assistance to the graduates. They have NO living space, NO working PLACES and NO HOPE. Unfortunately these youth go back to the streets and become criminals. The statistics prove that major problem for the 16-18 years old vulnerable youth is the living space and finding working places. Two existing shelters for the Street children serve for the youth up to 16. These two organizations can not provide all beneficiaries with the living space. Just some individual youth can live in the shelter, but it is not official, as for each shelter has just target group and of course the limited funds.
The staff of the Assoiciation MKURNALI conducted survey among the Street Children regarding the living conditions and the job related needs and opportunities. The 90% of the mail part of the recepients wish to learn the basiscs of the agribusiness, rehabilitatiuon and prophylactics techniques, cattle breeding, trade and related activities. As for the future professional orienation, the majority of the young men choose the profession related to the mini market and bakery auto service, because this job is prestijious among teenagers, they see that it is one of the working areas which gives income to the good professionals, also it is a chance to start private business.
The Association “MKURNALI” (Healer) jointly with the Academy for Peace and Development (APD) have experience in organising and implementing various joint training. The co-operation of these two organisations with the members of the NGOs is the first step towards success. (The information on both NGOs is attached).
